Abstract: The multiphase optimization strategy (MOST) is an increasingly popular framework to prepare, optimize, and evaluate multicomponent behavioral health interventions. Within this framework, it is common to use a factorial randomized trial to assemble an optimized multicomponent intervention by simultaneously testing several intervention components, after which a standard two-arm randomized controlled trial is conducted to evaluate the optimized intervention. In this seminar, we will discuss the optimization phase of MOST, the efficiency of factorial designs, and effect coding for the analysis of factorial trials. Using simulated data examples, we will explore the interpretation of main effects and interactions in factorial trials, and decision-making in the MOST framework.
