Master of Biostatistics Program Details

The Master of Biostatistics degree, a professional degree awarded by the Duke University School of Medicine, requires 50 credits of graded course work, a Practicum experience, a Proficiency Examination, and a Master’s Project for which 6 units of credit are given. Completed in the second year, the Master’s Project serves to demonstrate the student’s mastery of biostatistics. Successful completion of 44 course and lab credit hours and 6 Master’s Project credit hours are required for all degree candidates.

Degree and Non-degree Option

The degree option leads to a Master of Biostatistics. The degree requires graded course work, a Practicum experience, a Proficiency Exam, and a Master's Project. Eleven courses (BIOSTAT 701/701A, 702/702A, 703/703A, 703L, 704/704A, 705/705A, 706/706A, 721/721A, 722/722A, 801, 802) constitute the core courses required for all degree candidates. First-year students enroll in a total of 24 credit hours. In the second year, students take elective courses (18 credit hours) as well as complete their Master’s Project (6 credit hours).

Selected courses in the program are available to qualified individuals who want to acquire specific skills but who do not want to pursue the master's degree. In addition to graduate students in other programs at Duke, such individuals include faculty members and post-doctoral trainees in the medical center. Non-degree study is granted at the discretion of the Director of Graduate Studies, requires permission of the appropriate course instructor(s), and is subject to constraints imposed by course prerequisites and class size limitations.
