The 2021 Summer Scholars Program in Genome Sciences and Medicine for Underrepresented Minority Underclassmen begins May 11 and will run through July 2.
We are welcoming eight underrepresented minority students, some who were deferred from last year’s canceled program, to work in GCB labs. These students come from Duke, North Carolina Central University, Tufts University, Agnes Scott College, and Winston Salem State University.
While this summer will be a little different due to COVID-19 restrictions, these students will still get first-hand experience in conducting biomedical research, planning and carrying out research projects and presenting their work.
Each student will work with a faculty mentor through their eight week program. This year’s faculty members are

- Lingchong You, PhD, Professor of Biomedical Engineering
The Summer Scholars Program is a collaborative effort between GCB, the Duke Center for Applied Genomics and Precision Medicine, and North Carolina Central University. It is supported by an NIH R25 grant and provides high-quality mentored training experiences for underrepresented minority underclassmen to gain the experience, knowledge and skills to pursue a major in a STEM field and prepare for a job or higher learning in a STEM-related field. First- and second-year students from any college or university in the country can apply.
