Benjamin Alan Goldstein,PhD, professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics and chief for the Division of Translational Biomedical Informatics, has been named a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI).
The prestigious honor recognizes his contributions to the field of biomedical informatics, a discipline at the forefront of data-driven health care innovation.
Goldstein’s research spans biostatistics, machine learning, and epidemiology, with notable work on artificial intelligence, algorithmic bias, and clinical prediction models. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, Goldstein’s study of meaningful use of electronic health record data has furthered understanding of the opportunities and challenges in using these important data for clinical research.
His recent collaborations have advanced the understanding of conditions such as end stage kidney disease, autism and food insecurity among patients with diabetes. His work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and industry partners.
Goldstein is also an associate in the departments of pediatrics and population health sciences. He serves as the director of Data Science for Duke AI Health and is a member of the Duke Clinical Research Institute.
