GCB has partnered with the Duke Center for Applied Genomics and Precision Medicine (CAGPM) and North Carolina Central University (NCCU) for the Summer Scholar’s Program in Genome Sciences and Medicine for Underrepresented Minority Underclassmen. Nine students from all over the country will spend the next 10 weeks at Duke working with PIs from both Duke and NCCU. The program runs from May 21 to July 25.

Each student will work with a faculty mentor in a lab and will learn first-hand what it is like to conduct biomedical research. “I’m most excited about getting more acquainted with the lab, conducting my own research, and learning how to articulate myself to be able to talk about my research,” Savoya Joyner said.

Scholars will also participate in interactive learning activities, including meeting with researchers at Duke, NCCU and companies in Research Triangle Park to learn about career options in genome sciences and medicine. They will also attend weekly discussions on ethical, legal, social and policy issues related to genome sciences. At the end of the program, they will present their research and findings.

“I believe the hardest part in getting anywhere is believing you can,” said Kayla Hammond. “I hope this experience will motivate me to keep going in science and medicine.”
