Blessing Ibe is a 2022 graduate of Duke’s Master of Biostatistics program. Blessing works for Ely Lilly in Indianapolis, Indiana, as a Senior Computational Statistician.
Background and Motivation
- What initially drew you to the field of biostatistics?
I've always wanted to make an impact in healthcare, but I realized that being a patient-facing professional wasn't for me. Biostatistics lets me contribute to the field while using my strengths in statistics.
- Why did you choose Duke University’s Master of Biostatistics program?
I chose this program because of its unique career preparation component, which set it apart from others. The tailored support and real-world insights helped me transition into my professional role after graduation. Moving out of the Midwest to North Carolina was also exciting to me.
Academic and Personal Experiences
- What are some of your favorite memories or experiences from the program?
One of my favorite memories was graduation day! Celebrating with my classmates and with my family was so fun and it was incredibly rewarding to see our hard work pay off.
- Were there any faculty members or mentors who had a significant impact on your learning journey?
My master’s project advisor, Dr. Hwanhee Hong, was instrumental in my development. She pushed me to think critically and independently while also providing support and valuable references. Our monthly meetings with other students in the Hong lab allowed me to learn about the diverse methods and theories my classmates were exploring. Outside the lab, our dinner outings were also a highlight and a great way to connect! I’d also like to acknowledge Dr. Tina Davenport, whose mentorship from day one has been invaluable to me inside and outside of the classroom.
- How did the program prepare you for the challenges in your current role or in your field?
The program prepared me well for my current role by requiring the same level of ownership, accountability, and initiative that I need day-to-day. Completing my master’s project, in particular, mirrored the demands of my job—managing deadlines, conducting independent research, and thinking critically to solve problems—giving me a solid foundation for my current work .
Career Path and Current Role
- Can you describe your current role and responsibilities?
I am a statistical analyst for late-phase autoimmune drugs. My deliverables are primarily ad-hoc tables, figures and listings for abstracts, manuscripts, poster sessions, and things of that nature. My team uses R and SAS to conduct these analyses (mixed models, logistic regression, etc.).
- What are some projects or achievements of which you’re particularly proud?
I'm proud to have worked on 3 out of the Big 5 drug launches at my company. Being part of these big projects was exciting, and it felt great to contribute to the development of treatments that can make a remarkable difference in people’s health.
- How has your education in biostatistics influenced your career or opened up
opportunities?
My education in biostatistics has been key in shaping my career by giving me the skills to analyze data and think critically. It's opened doors for me to work as a statistical analyst, where I get to apply those skills to real-world problems in clinical research.
Challenges and Advice
What advice would you give to current or prospective students in the biostatistics program?
Remember to stay positive and don't let any single exam define your success. The program is a journey, and every challenge is just a chance to learn and improve.
Future Goals and Aspirations
- What are your goals for the next few years in your career?
In the next few years, I hope to deepen my expertise of statistical methods and processes within the clinical trials space. I also hope to take on more leadership responsibilities, and mentor junior team members.
- How do you see the field of biostatistics evolving, and what trends are you excited about?
I’m excited about the increased use of decentralized clinical trials, especially because it can make trials more inclusive and accessible.
Personal Interests and Balance
- Outside of work, what are your hobbies or interests?
I enjoy experimenting in the kitchen, travelling, hiking, watching Korean dramas and reading.
- How do you balance work and personal life while working in a demanding field?
I’ve communicated my usual working hours with my team to set expectations, and I make sure to negotiate deadlines ahead of time. Taking breaks during the day and fully unplugging after hours are also important strategies that help me stay balanced.
Reflections and Closing Thoughts
- Looking back, how has your journey in biostatistics changed or impacted you personally?
Even though I’m still early in my career, biostatistics has already given me a stronger sense of purpose and direction. It’s taught me the importance of precision, patience, and continual learning, especially in a field that impacts patient lives. I’m excited to see how these skills and perspectives will grow as I continue my journey
