Share

Emily Poehlein, originally from Northampton, Massachusetts, now resides in Durham, North Carolina. She graduated from Duke University’s Master of Biostatistics (MB) program in 2021, following her undergraduate studies at Vassar College, where she majored in Biology and minored in Math.

While in the MB program, Emily was a BCTIP intern, gaining valuable hands-on experience that shaped her career trajectory. Upon completing her degree, she joined the BERD Core as a Biostatistician II, where she has worked since 2021. In her role, Emily engages in a variety of clinical research projects across orthopedics, pulmonary, and cellular therapy. Her responsibilities include sample size calculations, SAP development, data cleaning and analysis, report writing, and manuscript editing. She values the diversity in her daily tasks and enjoys collaborating with clinical investigators, particularly in explaining statistical concepts to non-statisticians.

Emily highlights the importance of clear communication in her work, a skill she honed during the MB program. “Beyond statistical theory and programming skills, learning to communicate statistical results and methodologies to non-statisticians has been crucial in my job,” she shares.

Like many professionals in her field, Emily faces the challenge of managing multiple projects and deadlines. However, with strong organizational skills, she effectively navigates her busy schedule. For current students transitioning from school to the workforce, she advises, “Informational interviews are a great tool to narrow down your job search. Set up interviews with MB alums or biostatisticians in your network across various settings to find roles that align with your career values.”

Outside of work, Emily enjoys reading and walking her dog after a long day. She is also excitedly planning her wedding, set for February 2025. Her parting advice for current MB students? “Take advantage of your alumni network—we’re always willing to help! And don’t forget to attend at least one basketball game at Cameron Indoor!”
