Congratulations to Dr. Karen Goldstein, MD, MSPH, CRTP Course Instructor and Associate Professor of Medicine (General Internal Medicine), as the recent recipient of two awards that will support high priority areas of research involving veterans, especially to advance the care of women veterans and the care of African-American veterans in rural NC.
SUPPORT FOR RECRUITMENT OF WOMEN VETERANS
Dr. Goldstein is the recipient of the Women’s Enhanced Recruitment Process-2 or WERP-2 ($2.4 million over 3 years) as co-PI along with Dr. Susan Frayne at the VA Palo Alto. Dr. Jennifer Gierisch of Duke Population Health Sciences and General Internal Medicine is a co-investigator on WERP-2.
This proposal was funded through the VA Cooperative Studies Program led by Dr. Grant Huang. The overarching objective of this work is to apply and evaluate a new Hub-and-Spokes Framework along with training tools that supports the recruitment of women Veterans across Cooperative Studies Program studies.
TELEHEALTH AMONG AFRICAN-AMERICAN VETERANS IN RURAL NC
A second award funds a pilot proposal through the Veterans Access Research Consortium: PRovider and VEteran PerSpectives ON Telehealth Access Disparities among Rural African-American VeTErans: (RESONATE) ($50,000 for 12 months) for which Dr. Goldstein is a co-PI along with Dr. Leah Zullig. Dr. Eugene Oddone is a co-investigator.
The overarching goal of this work is to better understand patient and provider experiences with telehealth among African American Veterans living in rural North Carolina to promote optimization of telehealth use as a tool to reduce potential access disparities rather than inadvertently creating them.
Dr. Goldstein is a general internist and health services researcher. In 2012, she took over as the Durham site lead for the VA Women’s Health Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN), of which the Durham VAMC was a founding member.
Dr. Goldstein is the recipient of a VA HSR&D Career Development Award. She has research expertise in evidence synthesis to the degree that she was named the co-director of the Durham VA’s Evidence Synthesis Program. Dr. Goldstein is a frequently requested speaker at both regional and national meetings. We are excited that she has become a leader in VA HSR&D research.
