B&B Faculty Serve The Academic Community On Editorial Boards

In recognition of status as a research scientist and expertise in the academic community, many Duke Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics faculty members are asked to serve on the editorial boards of research journals. B&B is proud to have an unusually large number of faculty currently serving in such positions.

The responsibilities on an editorial board take time, effort and commitment to ensure research reviews are of the highest quality and presented without bias. Frequently, board members assign and oversee the review of new biostatistics/bioinformatics methodology.  They ensure that reviews are fair and objective in evaluating whether the methodology is based on sound theoretical underpinnings and whether it is appropriate to the stated goal.   For more clinically oriented journals, the review is conducted with an eye toward whether the study was designed and conducted using appropriate methodology. Sometimes they also provide editorial commentary in the form of Editorials and Editor’s Notes that differentiate high quality methodology.  That platform allows our faculty to promote better methods to a wide audience.

In manuscript review, reviewers and editors act as a final scientific quality control of the publication of research.  One of the benefits to being a reviewer is that while faculty are chosen for their particular expertise, the work they review generally involves a wide range of issues within their field but also adds to an interdisciplinary foundation for their future work.  Another area where our reviewers add value is to be able discern whether the research is of interest only to experts in the field or whether there is a broader context and meaning to the public at large.

A point of pride for the Department is the diversity that our faculty bring to national editorial boards.
