Faculty Collaborate With Beijing Friendship Hospital To Win Silver Excellence In Learning Award From Brandon Hall Group

For “Building Clinical Research Skills by Bridging Cultures” Beijing Friendship Hospital (BFH), Capital Medical University and Duke University were recently awarded the Silver Excellence in Learning and Development Award by the Brandon Hall Group.

This award was specifically for the “Best use of blended learning” for the Fundamentals of Clinical Research Certificate Training Program.  This 13-week blended learning program was developed in 2017-2018 and is delivered twice yearly to Chinese physicians participating from across China.  Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics faculty members Steve Grambow and Sheng Luo along with Department of Medicine faculty John Williams serve as the primary Duke faculty for the program.

The program is innovative in its approach which consists of online eLearning self-study, live webinars, and an in-person one week workshop. The eLearning portion has six units covering both research design and biostatistical concepts that are narrated in English but include full written translation in Mandarin.  Live webinars provide an opportunity for Duke faculty to interact with Chinese participants and apply clinical research principles to specific case studies.  The capstone activity of the program is a one week workshop led by Duke and BFH faculty. Participants work in teams to develop a clinical research study proposal in-person at Beijing Friendship Hospital.
The Blended Learning for the Learning and Development category of the Brandon Hall Awards is designated for workplace learning programs using two or more delivery methods combining traditional Instructor Led training (ILT) with a mix of computer-based activities.  Award entries are evaluated by a panel of veteran, independent senior industry experts, Brandon Hall Group analysts and executives based on the following criteria, fit the need, design of the program, functionality, innovation and overall measurable benefits.

The Brandon Hall Group Excellence Award is one of the most prestigious awards events in the Learning, Talent and Business industry. The awards recognize the best organizations that have successfully developed and deployed programs, strategies, modalities, processes, systems, and tools that have achieved measurable results.
