On March 20, researchers across campus came together to celebrate recent advances and partnerships in health data science at Duke. After opening remarks by Chancellor Washington, Provost Kornbluth, and Vice Dean Boulware, speakers discussed the role of data science in health and medicine at Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI).
The next focus for discussion was “Aligning Duke and Duke Data Science” where B&B Faculty members Michael Pencina and Laine Thomas addressed the audience. Michael Pencina began his discussion by stating that “a huge part of what we do is framing the right questions, knowing what to do and when.” His formula for health data science is to 1) ask the right questions; 2) apply optimal methods; 3) share and implement insights. Laine Thomas discussed her faculty experiences within DCRI.
The late afternoon session on case studies in health data science was moderated by B&B faculty member Erich Huang, Assistant Dean for Biomedical Informatics. B&B’s Ben Goldstein discussed collaborative efforts with the Duke Private Diagnostic Clinic (PDC) Outcomes Research Team (PORT) to develop a risk model for patient no-shows and assess the efficacy of an associated intervention.
