The Duke Spark Initiative for AI in Medical Imaging formally launches this week. Spark’s mission at Duke encompasses research into development and use of artificial intelligence in medical imaging, with an emphasis on collaborative work between physicians across different specialties and machine learning experts.

The Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics is excited to announce two recent leadership changes: Laine Thomas, PhD, has been named Vice Chair of the Department, and Ben Goldstein, PhD, is the new chief of the Division of Translational Biomedical Informatics.

Duke University is collaborating with Harvard and the University of California, Davis on a three-year, $1.2 million award from the National Science Foundation to develop AI tools for an end-to-end pipeline for polyhedral geometry. The multidisciplinary research team includes Ethan Fang, PhD, associate professor of biostatistics and bioinformatics, and Jian Pei, PhD, Arthur S. Pearse Distinguished Professor of Computer Science.
