Faculty Goldstein Receives New Research Awards

Congratulations to Dr. Karen Goldstein, MD, MSPH, CRTP Course Instructor and Associate Professor of Medicine (General Internal Medicine), as the recent recipient of two awards that will support high priority areas of research involving veterans, especially to advance the care of women veterans and the care of African-American veterans in rural NC.

Susanna Naggie Named Vice Dean for Clinical Research for School of Medicine

Mary Klotman, MD, Dean, Duke University School of Medicine announced that Susanna Naggie, MD, has been named the new Vice Dean for Clinical Research for the Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Naggie is a 2013 graduate of the Clinical Research Training Program and has served as Associate Dean for Clinical Research Initiatives and Regulatory Affairs in the School of Medicine since 2019.

David Edelman Honored with Department of Medicine Mentoring Award

CRTP Course Director and GIM Associate Professor of Medicine, David Edelman, MD, has been selected by Duke Department of Medicine Leadership as a recipient of the 2020 Department of Medicine Career Research Mentoring Award in Clinical/Population Health.

Recipients of these awards demonstrate excellence in numerous aspects of mentoring, including accomplishments of individual mentees, programs implemented by the mentor, or by exceptional creativity in mentoring. This is a new recognition in the Department of Medicine.

Hernandez named Vice Dean and Executive Director of Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI)

Adrian Hernandez, MD, was named Vice Dean and Executive Director of the Duke Clinical Research Institute in 2020. In this role, he provides visionary and strategic direction to the DCRI; supports and strengthens its research and teaching agendas; and continues to raise its national and international profile. Among many key responsibilities, Dr. Hernandez oversees the DCRI to ensure continuance of a broad spectrum of clinical research programs, clinical trials, clinical and pre-clinical education, and shared data and repositories.

Study By Arif Kamal Shows Shortage Of Palliative Care Clinicians Will Increase Over Growing Demand For Services

A study led by Dr. Arif Kamal published in Health Affaires found that without policy changes there will be an increasing shortage of palliative care clinicians to care for people living with serious illness or dealing with end-of-life situations. Using recent data from a 2018 survey of palliative care and hospice clinicians, researchers modeled risk factors associated with clinicians leaving the field early and projected workforce numbers in the field for 2019 to 2059 under four scenarios.

Shah Named Associate Dean And Director Of Duke Precision Genomics Collaboratory

The Duke School of Medicine announced that Svati Shah, MD, MHS, has been named Associate Dean of Genomics and Director of the Duke Precision Genomics Collaboratory. The collaboratory is a new coordinating center that will serve as the nexus for genetics and genomics activities in the School of Medicine. As director, Dr. Shah will coordinate efforts among institutes, centers and departments in all areas of genetics and genomics, ranging from fundamental basic science to clinical genomics and precision medicine.
