Internal Learners are affiliated with Duke University, NIH, or another program-approved affiliated institution. They may apply for the MHSc degree, the Academic Core in Clinical Research Certificate, or Nondegree study.
Available Options
MHSc in Clinical Research
The MHSc is designed for professionals pursuing clinical, translational, or basic science research careers. The degree requires 36 credits and includes a mentored research project supervised by a three-member faculty examining committee.
Academic Core Certificate
The 16-credit certificate includes five required courses and provides foundational training in statistical methods, clinical research principles, statistical analysis, research ethics, and research management. Internal certificate learners may apply to convert to degree-seeking status before the certificate is awarded, subject to program approval and timing requirements.
Nondegree Study
Internal Learners may take one or more courses for academic credit. With program approval and subject to applicable policies, they may later apply to a certificate or degree pathway.
Funding Considerations
Internal Learners may be eligible for institutional or departmental support, including departmental funds, sponsored research or career development awards, or Duke University educational assistance for eligible faculty and staff. Learners should consult their program director, business manager, division chief, or sponsor about available support and potential tax implications.
